The Landscape Toolbox

Multi-scale Landscape Assessment Tools

The Multi-scale Landscape Assessment and Monitoring tools of the Landscape Toolbox are designed to help you identify the relevant scales for analysis from your data and to match the right field and remote sensing methods to the right scale to answer a rangeland management question as efficiently and accurately as possible.

Rangeland Assessment Methods Guide

Have you ever wondered which remote sensing methods you could use to answer a rangeland management question? Or been mystified at all the different field and remote-sensing approaches that are out there for rangelands and what the differences between them are? How about deciding whether to use field or remote sensing methods to get data to answer a question? The Rangeland Assessment and Monitoring Methods Guide helps you match a rangeland management question to recommended field and remote-sensing methods and provides valuable, rangeland-specific information on each method.

Rangeland Database and Field Data Entry System

The Rangeland Database and Field Data Entry System was developed by the USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range to increase the speed and precision of data entry in both the field and office and organize and store field data. Developed in Microsoft Access to be easy to use, fast, and flexible, the Rangeland Database supports data entry and storage for 16 different quantitative and qualitative assessment and monitoring methods.

Scale Detection & Extraction

Collecting and analyzing rangeland information at the right scale is critical to efficiently and accurately answering management questions. The Landscape Toolbox Scale Detection and Extraction tools identify the different scales of patterns present in image data, and, through a new method called object-based image analysis, can extract those patterns to be used in rangeland analysis.

Sample Design Tools

When collecting data to address a rangeland management question, knowing where to sample is every bit as important as knowing what to sample. The Landscape Toolbox provides some new tools built on multi-scale object-based image analysis that give you more power and flexibility to design field sampling efforts while still being easy to use.

Data Center

The Landscape Toolbox Data Center is an internet-mapping application where you can view and download many of the data layers created as part of the Landscape Toolbox project. You can also create online or upload boundaries and waypoints for the areas you are interested in without the need for any specialized software.
